Top 10 movies of 2016 – Must watch list -

As almost everyone across social media forums has given their list. But with the movies sorted right from start till the end of 2016(which many lists din’t cover).

Here is ours,

Irudhi Sutru (Knock Out):

Inspired from true events, film threw light on the struggles of women boxing, how the system of works. The rise of a raw talent through rigorous mentorship. The lead characters done by madhavan and rithika singh were fantabulous. Also, the OST of Santhosh Narayanan was magical. Overall, fine movie experience.

Visaranai (Interrogation):

Based on the true events that unfolded in the life of Chandrakumar in his early 20’s (Novel- ‘Lock Up’) The film was brutally hard hitting,showcasing how the system is above all in this so called democratic country. The performance of the protagonist (‘Attakathi’ Dinesh) was stunning and Samuthrakani’s national award winning performance was commendable. All in all, a riveting piece of work.

Kadhalum Kadanthu Pogum:

Based on the korean romantic comedy, ‘My Dear Desperado’. The film was the first real sensible romance film in 2016,with unusual meeting (as neighbours) of a gangster and a struggling unemployed graduate which blossoms as romance.

Uriyadi:

Political drama is a rarity in tamil cinema, that too from a new comer was unheard off. Vijay Kumar,who produced,acted and directed this kick ass work,illustrating again the impact of system which pulls a bunch of students who are victimized for the sake of (casteism) politics. It was again, fine movie experience.

Dharmadurai:

Dharma Durai is a drama directed by Seenu Ramaswamy starring Vijay Sethupathy, Thamanna, Ishwarya Rajesh, Rajesh, Radhika Sarathkumar and Srushti Dange. This movie portrays the slice of reality in the village and how it is tough to do what you like. The relationship between Tamannah and Vijay Sethupathi is one of the best portrayal in recent times. Above all, Andipatti kanava and Makka kalanguthappa was enough to show that Yuvan still has it in him.

Metro:

Again a gem from a youngster Anand Krishnan,this thriller was one of its kind for clearly showcasing the thefts that one would come across in big cities (aptly titled ‘metro’) It was like a case study by itself and still had a proper sub story of a family which gets affected by it.

Kuttramae Thandanai (Crime Is Punishment):

Though the title seems preachy/philosophical. The film wasn’t anywhere preachy except for the last scene. The ”point of view” camera work (protoganist suffering from tunnel vision and the film was set through his view) performance by the lead and scintallating back ground score,with gentle paced screenplay enriched the movie overall.

Aandavan Kattalai:

It showed how a simple formality at a government office could be done directly, but choosing the wrong path for quickening the process who lead to untoward circumstances. The performance of Vijay Sethupathi and Yogi Babu, a meaningful lead character played perfectly by rithika singh made it a good flick to watch out for. (the film was a clean entertainer with no double meaning dailogues and scenes which is rare to find).

Ammani:

Ammani is the third directorial venture from Lakshmy Ramakrishnan. The role of money in our day to day lives and how it changes the course of relationship forms the crux of the story. At the same rather than antagonising one side and giving a biased story, Lakshmy Ramakrishnan has weaved a wonderful tale of melodrama with no preachiness. I would go on to say that this is one of the movie that must not be missed at any cost.

Dhuruvangal Pathinaru:

Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru or popularly termed as D16 is a suspense drama written and directed by debutante Karthick Naren. Yesteryear star Rahman being the only known face and the movie came at the end of the year with less or no marketing hit the audience by storm majorly due to word of mouth reviews. One of the fine making in the recent years, although it has a few issues towards the end, the making and characterisation precedes to give the film a spot in the top ten.

Honourable Mentions:

Iraivi:

Loosely based on the work of Writer Sujatha, this movie directed by Karthik Subburaj talks about the women and their suffering due to men. The movie was good in terms of making and i felt something is missing that just holds it from entering the top spot.

Chennai 28 – II innings:

After a long gap, the boys are back and they are very good at what they are. Venkat Prabhu has a flair to play with cricket, youth and booze. Its definitely his home ground and as expected he gave exactly what people went in for, great music, perfect nostalgia, funny one liners and lots of cricket. Gopi’s bat theme and Maruthu theme along with the songs were screaming the return of Yuvan to his game.

Achcham Yenbathu Madamaiyada:

This movie is a second collaboration of Gautham Vasudev Menon with Simbu and the single which released last year totally peaked the expectations. the first half was totally worth the expectations. Great music, artistic picturization and empowered women are some unique elements of a Gautham movie which was all present. The love between Simbu and Manjima is one the best portrayal of love in Tamil Cinema ever in my humble opinion. The growth of love has been perfectly portrayed but falls flat in the second half. The deviation was different and personally I felt that this could have been handled differently.
